Parramatta Eels forward Shaun Lane will reportedly cop a hefty fine but will escape suspension over a photograph allegedly taken during Manly’s Mad Monday celebrations and this week leaked to the media.
Lane and the Eels went into damage control on Monday after the image showing him allegedly holding a bag of white powder was published by The Daily Telegraph.
He was interviewed by the NRL Integrity Unit and has denied being in possession of or using an illegal substance.
The image was allegedly snapped during the Sea Eagles’ end-of-season celebrations last season while Lane was still contracted to the northern beaches club.
It was shared on a Snapchat group text that was eventually made public.
According to The Daily Telegraph the 24-year-old will on Wednesday be whacked with a $20,000 fine for bringing the game into disrepute.
Lane has been named in the Eels’ squad to face the Gold Coast Titans on Friday night and is expected to play at this stage.
The Eels said in a statement on Monday after the photo was published by News Limted: “The Parramatta Eels are aware of photos which allegedly feature a current Eels player.
“These photos may have been taken before his time at the club
“The club has begun an internal investigation and will work with the NRL integrity unit on the appropriate next steps.
“We will be making no further comment until the investigation has been completed.”
The incident has renewed calls for all NRL clubs to abandon the tradition of Mad Monday celebrations.
