NRL 360 host Ben Ikin has responded to the spray he received from Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart on Tuesday night, as the fallout from Hudson Young’s eye gouge suspension continues.
The Raiders rookie was banned for 8 matches for an incident with Adam Pompey in Round 25, and the Green Machine coach defended his player to the death over the charge, claiming his innocence.
This prompted plenty of chatter within the game, and led to Stuart firing back at those – including Ikin – who refuted the player and coach’s series of events.
The former Broncos playmaker responded on Wednesday night’s show, explaining the series of events surrounding the Raiders mentor and himself.
“I didn’t notice it until I picked up The Daily Telegraph this morning and I was on the front page,” he said.
“I see that it’s on the front page and I thought ‘this is going to be good’ so I sat down and I read them and immediately knew that it had been a build up of frustration for Ricky.
“So I picked up the phone and sent out a text message and said ‘when you’re ready to talk, let me know’ and he’d already made his way to training. We spoke this afternoon and he took some convincing that I hadn’t said the wrong thing.
“I turned him, but he was certainly emotional about what was happening to Hudson Young and I took his point.”
Stuart also took aim at the likes of Andrew Johns and Reni Maitua, who had plenty to say about the eye gouging incident involving the 21-year old enforcer.

But Ikin, and co-host Kent, weren’t done there and defended themselves and their comments.
“He felt that I was being sarcastic about his right to defend his player,” Ikin said.
“I don’t think Ricky had embraced the whole conversation, he took that one snippet and it broke him.
“He has been highly emotional about this case because he believes the player’s version of events, and we all know Ricky Stuart is a player’s coach.”
Kent would continue on from this, and share his conversation with Stuart from Wednesday afternoon.
“I spoke about it on Matty Johns’ podcast today and I suggested that he’d had a couple of wines,” he laughed.
“So he rang me this afternoon and said ‘did you say something about me having a couple of wines last night’ and I said yeah that’s probably where you were at, you got the shits and you’d had enough.
“And he said, yeah fair call.”
